How can we define Environmental Labeling?

 

Environmental labeling informs consumers about the environmental impacts of a product or service to guide them during their purchasing and allow them to make an intelligent choice.

To inform and eco-design, companies evaluate the environmental impacts of the product and / or services all along its life cycle (manufacturing - distribution - use - end of life), on the basis of a common approach.

 

A response to the French expectations


According to the annual survey on sustainable consumption TNS / Ethicity (2010), 54% of French people are increasingly suspicious towards ecological arguments in publicities while at the same time, 74% of them wish to learn the environmental impact of products. These results emphasize consumer expectations for objective, reliable and transparent information.

 

What are the benefits for consumers?


Environmental labeling of products complements the labels already in place for several product categories:

CO2 car label;
Energy labeling of household electric devices;
Health labels.


Unlike the existing labels and besides CO2 emissions, Environmental labeling takes into account, most significant impacts for each category of products throughout its life cycle.

 

Who is concerned by Environmental labeling?

 

Grenelle Environment has two principal objectives:

Provide additional information for the consumer about the environmental impacts of products and to help them through a more sustainable purchasing
Encourage businesses to improve their product eco-design by providing environmental performance indicators.
